Aimed at Filipino migrant workers in Trieste and their peers, this exhibition aims to explore how/why/when monuments are built, maintained, polished, celebrated, forgotten, demolished and redefined. The residues of this re-enactment will be collected and edited, in order to then create a publication or a film. Karaoke is planned during the launch of the publication or film. Practicing art, especially for those who come from a working-class background, is considered a luxury. I was only able to afford it thanks to the support of my generous, mostly female relatives who work as migrant workers in Europe. Without them I don't think I would be able to build the foundations of my career as a cultural operator. Over the years I have entered institutions and spaces that I never imagined I would be able to welcome. My practice became the key that allowed me to "nest", in the form of exhibitions, conferences, research and editorial interventions, leading me to (re)define and (re)shape parts of my identity, history and consciousness. Through this residency I intend to highlight not only the issues of migration and labor, but also the individual and collective struggle and aspirations that have been formed by being away from home, particularly the Philippines. Monuments are generally built to commemorate a significant event or person. Their presence also serves to orient oneself in a city, a country, a place. Urban monuments reflect how our ancestors used trees, mountains and rivers as landmarks to remember their journey. What would happen if the monuments suddenly moved? How do you think we will identify locations or get to destinations? How could we become navigators without monuments?
