This is the first time Beyond the Garden has been staged, with an adaptation I personally oversaw from Kosinsky's splendid novel. Few people perhaps know that Beyond the Garden was not only an extraordinary film, but also an original narrative, which partly diverges from the screenplay, revealing a disarming simplicity in the narrative, making it as fascinating and powerful as a great ancient fairy tale.
In an international scenario like the one we are experiencing, where the leaders of the great powers all seem alike in their lack of foresight, empathy, and humanity; where thought has given way to slogans and war has become the protagonist of world conflicts, recounting the simplicity of a man who has always lived alone in relationship with his garden can now become even more revolutionary than when Kosinsky's novel was written.
The protagonist of our play will be Claudio Greg Gregori, known as Greg, who, with his naturally eccentric personality, perfectly embodies the driving force behind our story: Chance the Gardener. For sixty years, Chance has lived confined to his small, lovingly tended garden, knowing nothing of reality except the programs and films he watches on television. On the day he must leave the garden that is his world, those outside, even the most powerful, will be enchanted by his peaceful humanity, so much so that he becomes an advisor to the President of the United States. One of the characters most captivated by his revolutionary simplicity will be the wife of a former US minister, a role Michela Andreozzi plays with extreme humanity and irony.
Bringing this wonderful story to the stage for the first time, in which simplicity and pure knowledge of the world through flowers become a metaphor for the possible and true nature of existence, is a poetic and ironic challenge to our world dominated by violence.
